IRS IRIS 1099 Filing Software: FIRE to IRIS Transition Support

File 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC through IRIS and IDES — without rebuilding your compliance stack

The IRS has retired the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system. Starting with the 2027 filing season, electronic 1099 filing runs through the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) — a structured, XML-based intake platform that validates data at submission instead of reporting errors weeks later.

Novus Compliance gives you a single, IDES-compatible 1099 filing module. Upload your data, and our engine generates schema-compliant XML, applies the required digital signature and encryption, transmits to the IRS, and returns an official acknowledgement. No schema programming, no certificate procurement, no last-minute rejections. For background on the regulatory change, see our IRIS 1099 Filing Guide.

Why the FIRE Retirement Breaks Legacy 1099 Workflows

Most payers and agents hit the same four walls:
  • Format change: FIRE accepted fixed-width text files. IRIS requires XML that conforms to the IRS schema package, or a CSV built strictly on the IRS-issued template. Existing extract routines will not port across unchanged.
  • New credentials: IRIS TCCs are issued separately from legacy FIRE TCCs and are non-transferable. Foreign filers need a Foreign Filer TCC and TCC GIIN before they can transmit through IDES.
  • Stricter name and TIN rules: Payer and recipient names must be split into separate line fields, TIN types must be declared, and country and phone fields are mandatory — see the 1099 IRIS Excel template for the required column set.
  • Real-time validation: IRIS rejects malformed files at submission. There is no grace period and no partial acceptance — a single schema error fails the whole batch.

Built for the New IRS Intake Model

Secure, centrally encrypted processing. Payer TINs, recipient TINs, names, addresses and payment amounts are sensitive by definition. All 1099 data is processed within a single encrypted environment, at rest and in transit, using AES-256-CBC — the cryptographic standard required by the IRS. How Our 1099 IRIS Filing Module Works

1. Prepare your data

Download the Novus Compliance 1099 template, populate it, and upload. Separate tabs are provided for 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC, with all mandatory IRIS fields already mapped — free Excel templates. If your data already lives in an ERP or accounting system, we integrate directly instead.

2. Validate before you transmit

Automated checks catch the errors that cause rejections: TIN format and type mismatches, missing country or phone fields, invalid state codes, negative or malformed amounts, and duplicate record identifiers. Pre-validate any XML file with our free XML Validation Tool.

3. Generate and sign the XML payload

We generate the transmission, submission and record levels of the IRIS XML structure, apply the enveloping XML digital signature, and encrypt the payload — the technical steps that most in-house teams have never had to build.

4. Transmit through IRIS or IDES

Files are transmitted using your IRIS TCC, or through the IDES gateway for eligible foreign filers. Corrections and prior-year filings are handled through the same channel with the correct indicators.

5. Confirm and distribute

You receive the official transmission receipt and a status report proving acceptance, plus recipient copies ready for distribution.

Key Features of Our 1099 Filing Platform

  • IRIS & IDES compatible: Schema-compliant XML generation for the IRS IRIS intake path and the IDES gateway, including the transmission, submission and record levels of the schema.
  • Both filing routes supported: A2A system-to-system transmission for higher volumes, and IRS CSV template preparation for portal upload — one platform for either route.
  • 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC and more: Separate form types handled independently, exactly as IRIS requires, with corrections and prior-year submissions supported.
  • TIN and schema validation: Automated format, type and business-rule checks that prevent submission-time rejection. Verify ID formats with our GIIN Validation Tool.
  • TCC application support: Guidance through the IRIS TCC and Foreign Filer TCC registration process so your credentials are in place before the season opens.
  • Complete audit trail: A full log of data changes, generated files, transmissions and acknowledgements for internal and external audits.

Find quick and clear answers to the most common
questions about 1099 filing through IRIS and IDES

What is the difference between IRIS and the old FIRE system?

FIRE accepted fixed-width text files and reported errors after the fact. IRIS is the IRS's replacement intake system: it requires structured XML (or a CSV built on the IRS-issued template), validates data at submission, and issues real-time acknowledgements. The FIRE system is no longer the filing channel for information returns. See our IRIS 1099 Filing Guide for the full comparison.

Do I need a new Transmitter Control Code (TCC) for IRIS?

Yes. IRIS TCCs are issued separately from legacy FIRE TCCs and are non-transferable. Foreign filers must obtain a Foreign Filer TCC and a TCC GIIN through the IRS Foreign Filer TCC Registration System before any IDES transmission. Novus Compliance guides you through the application so credentials are in place before the season opens.

What are the 1099 filing deadlines for tax year 2026?

Form 1099-NEC is due to the IRS and to recipients by 1 February 2027. Form 1099-MISC is due to recipients by 1 February 2027 and to the IRS by 1 March 2027 when filed electronically. Always confirm current dates against the IRS information returns deadline page for the applicable tax year.

Can I still file 1099s on paper?

E-filing is mandatory for filers submitting 10 or more information returns in a year. Below that threshold, paper filing may still be permitted, but IRIS is the electronic route and is required for prior-year and correction filings submitted electronically. Check the current threshold in IRS Publication 5717 before deciding.

Does Novus Compliance support 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC in the same file?

IRIS requires separate upload files for different form types, so 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC are prepared and submitted independently. Our platform handles both form types from a single workflow, applying the correct schema and field set for each. Download the 1099 IRIS Excel template to see the required columns for each form.

What is A2A filing and do I need it?

Application-to-Application (A2A) filing is system-to-system transmission of XML payloads to IRIS. It suits filers with higher volumes or recurring automated workflows. Lower volumes can be handled through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal using the IRS CSV templates. Novus Compliance supports both paths — see our A2A 1099 Filing page for the technical requirements.

Do I need to convert my data into XML format myself?

No. You do not need to learn XML programming or schema validation. Upload your data using the Novus Compliance template and the platform generates the schema-compliant XML, applies the digital signature and encryption, and transmits it on your behalf. Get started with our free templates.

Do I need to purchase my own digital certificate?

No. This is a major benefit of using Novus Compliance. We act as your authorized third-party transmitter and sign and encrypt your data using our digital credentials, saving you the cost and hassle of buying and maintaining your own certificate. See our Technology page for encryption details.

What happens if my file contains invalid TINs or schema errors?

IRIS rejects malformed files at submission with no grace period. Our platform performs smart data validation before submission — checking TIN format and type, name field structure, country and phone fields, state codes and amount formatting — and alerts you immediately so issues are fixed before the file reaches the IRS. You can also pre-validate any XML file with our free XML Validation Tool.

Can you file corrections and prior-year 1099s through IRIS?

Yes. Corrections and prior-year returns are filed through IRIS using the appropriate correction indicators and prior-year tax year values. Use our dedicated Correction Filing Checklist to verify every step before submission.

Are non-US filers supported for 1099 IDES filing?

Yes. Foreign filers who must submit Forms 1099 electronically do so through IDES using a Foreign Filer TCC and TCC GIIN. Novus Compliance supports the IDES transmission path alongside the IRIS A2A and portal routes — see our IDES 1099 Filing page for details.

How many records can I upload at once?

The IRIS Taxpayer Portal accepts a maximum of 250 forms per CSV upload file. Our platform is built for bulk processing and can efficiently handle reports for thousands of recipients across multiple batches, which is ideal for Chartered Accountants and tax consultants managing multiple clients.

Can I keep my existing ERP or accounting system?

Yes. You can continue exporting your 1099 data and load it into our template, or we can integrate directly with your ERP, accounting or marketplace platform so data flows automatically into the filing workflow. Contact us to discuss the integration options.

How do I know my 1099 submission was actually accepted?

Transparency is key. Once we transmit your data to the IRIS intake system or the IDES gateway, we provide you with the official transmission receipt and a status report proving that your return was accepted — documented evidence for internal and external audits.

Is my financial data safe with you?

Yes. We use bank-grade security. Your data is encrypted at rest and in transit using AES-256-CBC encryption standards, which is the exact cryptographic standard required by the US IRS. We never share, sell or expose your data to third parties. Learn more on our Technology & Security page.
